In May of 2019, my colleague and now best friend came to my apartment and said, "what do you think of private practice?" I had just had a baby and was on leave from a position that I was burnt out of. I was not sure if I could manage a new practice, family and my job.
After being awarded $4000 in an investor pitch competition with Omaha's I Be Black Girl, I had the confidence to get started and open my practice. I was coached by brilliant business analysts and therapists in private practice; and slowly transitioned out of my W2 job. I knew that if I wanted my career to last and the 8 year college investment to not be wasted, I had to make a change.
The Practice Thrived
The Practice Thrived
November 2019 I took my first client. I was nervous but did it anyway. I learned that all I truly needed was 'two chairs and a clock.' By January 2020 I had 25 clients and by October 2020 I hired my first contracted therapists. There has been many ups and downs but I know that with the right guidance and strategic planning we have made it.
My story is not unique. You are likely a professional counselor who is burning at two ends looking for a way to reconnect to your passion of mental health. In private practice, you have freedom of time, caseload and increased earnings. Outpatient clients WANT to be in therapy and you are the designer of your career.
